The 2024 IUS Canada Conference will be held at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario from October 25-27. We welcome papers or organized panels that address the key themes of interest to the IUS Fellows in support of emerging scholarly research dealing with the military establishment and civil-military relations. We now have a downloadable spreadsheet of Co-Director Publications available on our website at https://www.cdsn-rcds.com/resources Bianca Siem is a fourth-year undergraduate at the University of Manitoba, completing her Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Political Studies. She is a dedicated student leader, currently serving her second term as the Director of Arts Services for the Faculty of Arts Student Body Council, and previously served as Vice President of the Undergraduate Political Studies Student Association. Bianca is a passionate advocate for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights on campus and actively participates as a member of Queer BIPOC students at the University of Manitoba. She is also a Co-op student interning at Narratives Inc. as a planning intern, where she is involved in research, policy analysis, and community and environmental planning. Her work primarily focuses on Indigenous Reconciliation and collaborating with different Nations to uncover the truth. Outside her academic pursuits, Bianca is a local volunteer, advocating for gender diversity and equity, organizing youth advocacy groups, and supporting her local women’s shelter. She leads the Youth Climate Corps chapter in Manitoba, campaigning for sustainable job opportunities for youth across Canada. Additionally, she is a mental health advocate, with training in psychological first aid and trauma awareness. Bianca’s interests include international relations, law, intelligence, and climate change resilience, particularly in relation to security and defense. Inspired by her parents, Survivors of the Cambodian genocide, she is driven to create impactful societal changes. After completing her degree, she plans to further explore the field of security and defense, integrating her personal interests and expertise. Cordelia Jamieson (she/her), commencing her fourth and final year at Queen’s University, is pursuing a degree in Political Studies alongside a minor in Gender Studies. Her research interests include gendered political implications, Canadian defence and security, voter behaviour, and American electoral systems. Cordelia has gained a robust foundation in defence and security policy through various professional experiences. During an internship with the Government of Canada, she gained firsthand insight into the complexities of policy-making processes and collaborated with different departments to support the Canadian caucus. As a communications intern with the Centre for International and Defence Policy, Cordelia leads the mentorship program, coordinates panel events, manages communication strategies, and facilitates public outreach. Currently, she is a research assistant on Dr. Michael Murphy’s project examining the intersection of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda and the ever-evolving sphere of quantum technology. This research highlights gendered implications and aligns Canada’s WPS agenda with quantum security. Cordelia is also the Co-Editor-in-Chief at Political Digest, an undergraduate peer-reviewed journal at Queen’s University. She has authored several publications on defence and security and gender politics, reflecting her commitment to the development of an inclusive, diverse, and forward-thinking security community. The CDSN provides $2,500 to two students each year to help support their third or fourth year at a Canadian university. This scholarship is aimed at supporting a key CDSN objective: fostering a more diverse and inclusive Canadian defence and security community. Our research agenda is expansive, with our Research Themes seeking to understand under what conditions Canadian efforts increase or decrease the security of Canadians at home and those Canada seeks to help abroad. The recipient will not only receive funding but will be invited to take part in CDSN events and activities that match the student’s interests. —————————————————————————————- Le RCDS verse 2 500 $ à deux étudiants chaque année pour les aider à soutenir leur troisième ou quatrième année du premier cycle dans une université canadienne. Cette bourse vise à soutenir un objectif clé du RCDS : favoriser une communauté canadienne de défense et de sécurité plus diversifiée et inclusive. Notre programme de recherche est vaste, et nos thèmes de recherche cherchent à comprendre dans quelles conditions les efforts canadiens augmentent ou diminuent la sécurité des Canadiens au pays et ceux que le Canada cherche à aider à l'étranger. Les bénéficiaires recevront non seulement du financement, mais seront invités à participer à des événements et à des activités du RCDS qui correspondent aux intérêts de l'étudiant.

Manaswini Ramkumar is the CDSN Postdoctoral Fellow 2024-2025 at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University. She is completing her PhD in International Relations at the School of International Service, American University in Washington DC, where she examines civil-military relations in the context of democratic erosion. She also studies postcolonial statebuilding, subnational democracy, and authoritarian resistance. Her work has been funded by American University, The Association for Documentary Editing and the American Political Science Association. She received her MPhil in IR from American University and MSc in Strategic Studies from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore where she previously worked as an Associate Research Fellow in the Military Studies program and was a lecturer in Professional Military Education to the Singapore Armed Forces. Manaswini Ramkumar est boursière postdoctorale du RCDS 2024-2025 à la Norman Paterson School of International Affairs de l'Université Carleton. Elle termine son doctorat en relations internationales à la School of International Service de l'American University à Washington DC, où elle examine les relations civilo-militaires dans le contexte de l'érosion démocratique. Just as the Summer Institute is the highlight of the year for the Canadian Defence and Security Network - Réseau Canadien Sur La Défense et la Sécurité (CDSN-RCDS), the day at NDHQ is the highlight of the week. We had very informative conversations with Associate Defence Minister Natasha Kim, Commodore Jason Anderson of the Navy, Colonel Heather Morrison of the Army, MG Dave Yarker of Cyber Command, and Laura Holland of CFINTCOM.
