What’s New at the CDSN
Letter from the Director
The CDSN, like everyone else, has been challenged by the ups and downs of the pandemic. We held an event marking the 20th anniversary of 9/11, including an assessment of how our reactions to that day made Canada both more and less secure. We took advantage of the decline in COVID in between waves to hold a very successful hybrid Year Ahead event in early December. This was the first significant in-person event we held since the start of the COVID pandemic. It was great to see people in person, have conversations that may lead to new events and research agendas, and get some new perspectives. The end of 2021 not only meant another YearAhead in the books but also that we are closing on in the end of our third year of the CDSN. We will be re-launching a variety of initiatives in early 2022—a new book workshop competition, a new post-doc competition, a Capstone Seminar that we hope to hold in Calgary in early March—as well as continuing our podcasts, the research in our various themes, and our continued engagement with the government, the private sector, and the Canadian public.
I am so grateful to our partners who have adapted along with us to the uncertainties imposed by the pandemic. I am very thankful to the CDSN Co-directors for continuing to push their research agendas, to mentor the next generation of defence scientists, scholars, and policy-makers, and for providing me with much needed guidance. Our team “at” Carleton—Melissa, Kaha, Paxton, Rachael, Rosalind, and Gabriel—have done all of the heavy lifting to not just continue with our plans but develop new activities and ambitions. It was great to see all of them at the Year Ahead, and we hope to be able to meet more in person in the new year. We have to say goodbye to Paxton as she is moving to a fulltime job at Global Affairs Canada. She has been a mainstay of the CDSN for the past two years, not only helping out with the podcasts, but also providing much research and constructive suggestions.
Thanks again for supporting the CDSN. May your 2022 be one filled with health and happiness.
