We are hiring a part-time Communications Officer

Position:  Communications Officer, Canadian Defence and Security Network

Location: Ottawa, Ontario (remote)

Job-Terms: Part-time, 20 hours per week one-year contract (renewable)

Salary: 30,000 CDN

 

Job Description

The Communications Officer of the Canadian Defence and Security Network, located within the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and headquartered at the Centre for Security, Intelligence and Defence Studies (CSIDS), entails several overlapping administrative, promotion, and marketing responsibilities. The Communications Officer of the CDSN reports primarily to the Chief Operations Officer of the Canadian Defence and Security Network The Communication Officer’s main responsibilities lie in assisting the COO of the CDSN in implementing the long-term strategic vision of the Communications Strategic Plan through event promotion, podcast editing, and translation.

Operational Duties

  • Edit and produce weekly podcasts for Battle Rhythm and Conseils de sécurité

  • Develop, write and edit marketing and communications materials, including podcast summaries, website posts and social media content

  • Promote communications and marketing materials through appropriate social channels

  • Track analytics and create reports detailing successes and failures of communications campaigns

  • Ensure that all communications and marketing material aligns with brand standards

  • Maintain digital media archives including photos and videos

  • Work with communications team members to conceptualize and implement communications strategies and campaigns

Experience

·        Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree and preferably higher in Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field, with a preferred concentration in international relations or other relevant subfield.

·        Previous event-planning experience (can include association committee work, conference programme work, etc.)

Skills and Qualifications

·        Understand the best practices of main social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc

·        Must possess exceptional writing skills and be able to compose engaging and accurate content

·        Strong communicator who works well independently and with a team

·        Superior time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously

·        Ability to think strategically and identify ways to improve communication efforts

·        Knowledge and awareness of the Canadian academic and non-academic defence community, including key events and opportunities, is an asset

·        Intermediate knowledge of Dropbox is required

·        Must be bilingual in both of Canada’s official languages

Terms of Appointment

The appointment of Communications Officer is for one year.

The Communications Officer works remotely with the option of using the CDSN/CSIDS Headquarters, located in Richcraft Hall at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.
