2022 CDSN Early Career Book Workshop Winner: Thomas Hughes

Thomas Hughes is a Postdoctoral student at the University of Manitoba and the 2022 CDSN Postdoctoral Fellow, having received his PhD from Queen’s University in August 2021. His primary areas of research are on confidence-building, deterrence, and strategic culture, with his award-winning dissertation focusing on how military exercises have been used to shape the political and security environment in Europe since 1975. His current research focuses on Arctic defence and security.

The manuscript addresses two tightly interconnected topics. The first section examines why the terms of the regime of Confidence- (and Security-)Building Measures (C(S)BMs) in Europe developed as they did, and how the regime has been viewed and used by participants. The second section is an assessment of the way in which the Soviet Union, Russia, and NATO have used military exercises as signaling mechanisms. This analysis highlights the differences in the way in which each actor perceived others’ exercises, as well as identifying when and why certain exercises were seen as particularly threatening.

Dr. Hughes plans to publish his book in 2023.

The Power of Diversity in the Armed Forces - International Perspectives on Immigrant Participation in the Military

The Power of Diversity in the Armed Forces - International Perspectives on Immigrant Participation in the Military

Edited by Grazia Scoppio and Sara Greco

Book description

While countries throughout the world rely on immigrants to support their populations and economies, access to the military is limited, or denied to those who have not yet acquired citizenship. Precluding immigrants from serving in their host country’s armed forces is an issue of moral equity and operational effectiveness. Allowing immigrants to enlist ensures that the military represents the population it serves and encourages inclusivity and cultural change within the institution, while also creating a more effective military force. The Power of Diversity in the Armed Forces – International Perspectives on Immigrant Participation in the Military investigates how different countries approach the inclusion or exclusion of immigrants in their armed forces and offers immigrant military participation as a pathway to citizenship and a way to foster greater societal integration and achieve a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive military. By surveying international perspectives on immigrant and non-citizen military participation in twelve countries, The Power of Diversity in the Armed Forces introduces and examines a new way to unlock the power of diversity in military organizations globally.

The perspectives presented in this edited collection come from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, India, Israel, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.  The book will be a valuable resource for researchers, instructors and students within a variety of disciplines and sub-disciplines, including military sociology, defence studies and professional military education, as well as for military and civilian defence staff who work in recruitment, defence policy, or employment equity organizations.

Canadian Defence and Security Network Early Career Book Workshop

Deadline: April 29, 2022, Workshop to take place in Fall 2022

Overview.  The CDSN Book Workshop Program provides support for the development of scholarly monographs for early-career researchers.  It provides a forum for generating constructive and informed feedback on a completed book manuscript).

Eligibility.  Early career (pre-tenure) Canadian scholars[1] working on the subject of Defense and Security.  When applying, applicants should consider carefully their anticipated writing schedule. Dissertations that have been recently completed that are not ready for publication with an academic press will not be considered.

Workshop details. The workshop will bring together two experts whose work is relevant to the subject of the book in question along with a select group of CDSN members.  The CDSN will handle all logistics related to the workshop. The location of the workshop will depend on the focus of the chosen submission with the aim of having the manuscript discussed at a CDSN research centre that has its own experts on the topic.[2]

Proposal Requirements and Selection Criteria

Proposals should focus on scholarly manuscripts being produced with the intent of securing a publishing contract with an academic press. Workshop proposals must include the following components:

1. A brief one-page (max) cover letter that explains the status of the manuscript (whether the work is under contract with a publisher, a list of publishers who have expressed interest, or a list of potential publishers identified by the applicant). The cover letter should also include a list of scholars (5) the applicant may wish to participate at their workshop. The applicant need not have contacted these individuals before hand.
